On 5 January 2026, Mr. Ahmed Bashir El-Nefeidi, Thai Honorary Consul in Khartoum, Republic of the Sudan, and his spouse, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Thanawat Sirikul, Ambassador of Thailand to Egypt, at the Ambassador's Residence in Cairo. The Honorary Consul provided updates on the latest developments in the Sudan and exchanged views on next step cooperation. On this occasion, the Ambassador thanked the Honorary Consul for his support in the evacuation of Thai citizens from the Republic of the Sudan in April 2023 and expressed his hope for a return to normalcy and lasting peace in the Sudan. He also hoped that Thailand and the Sudan could resume cooperation once the situation returns to normal in areas with potential, such as national reconstruction, tourism (especially medical tourism in Thailand and tourism to the Sudan's historical sites), training, and education. Thailand attaches importance to promoting relations with countries in the African region, including the Sudan, especially in trade, investment, and development cooperation, under the Thailand-Africa Initiative (TAI), which aims to drive and strengthen ties with the African region.
